Time-frequency analysis

Hello to everyone,
I open this post because I've some issues to understand what exactly is the time-frequency analysis and how I can do it on a acquired signal.
I know that it's a 2D analysis in which I can see the behaviour of the frequency components of the signal vs. the time, but how can I perform it?
I saw the small block of the STFT in labview, which has six inputs. Therefore I mean what are the guidelines that I must follow if i Want to do a good time frequency analysis?

I wanna do the time-frequency analysis of two kinds of signals:
1) from an accelerometer
2) from a microphone
both signals have been taken on a engine.
To perform the time-frequency analysis, I want to use the STFT; however, from labview, I saw that i must set a lot of parameters. Therefore I wrote here to know if someone can explain me how I get my target.
Since I'm a beginner, i don't know if I'm on the right way...
Can you help me?
